Oregon’s third Capitol building is turning 75 and on October 1, 2013 and you are invited to the party!
The Capitol Foundation is planning a festive 75th birthday celebration with special events throughout the day on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at the Capital, just a couple of miles from our hotel.
The event will include live music, displays, birthday cards from local school children, and well-deserved birthday gifts for the Capitol from noon-5 p.m. Free tours available all day.
Be sure to check out the “Light up the Dome” event with super-sized birthday candles surrounding the Capitol dome that will shine over the city. Here are some historical facts about Oregon’s State Capitol building you may not have known:
- Our present Capitol was dedicated on October 1, 1938 after the previous two buildings were destroyed in fires; one on December 30, 1855 and another on April 25, 1935.
- The building houses several elected state officials – the Governor, the Secretary of State, and the State Treasurer – in addition to the entire Legislative Branch of state government.
- Artist Ulric Ellerhusen created the famous Oregon Pioneer statue that sits atop the building (and inspired Travel Salem’s “Sal”). The statue weighs eight-and-a-half tons and 22 ft tall.
