The Grand Hotel is proud to once again help sponsor one of our favorite annual events in Salem, Oregon! Quiltopia 2016 will be at the Willamette Heritage Center September 30th – October 2nd. This unique event inspires locals and visitors to learn more about the joys of using textiles in a traditional and/or contemporary art form while raising funds for for Helping Hands Resources.
Why Quilts? Quilting in America dates back to the 1600’s with the English and Dutch settlers. The quilt, as we know it, was originally an every day household item necessary to of provide warmth. Quilts were also used as hangings for doors and windows that were not sealed well enough to keep out the cold. Through the centuries, quilters have integrated more elaborate patterns and designs, unique fabrics and modern sewing techniques which has caused quilting to evolve into a celebrated art form.
Quiltopia offers a variety of activities and provides a rich experience for quilters of all ages and levels. We can’t wait to see the amazing handcrafted pieces by participating local quilters while spending the day at one of our favorite local destinations, and we hope to see you there!
